About

Welcome to The Hipping Post, my experiment in sketching, painting, and writing.

THP started in 2011, as a way to update my friends and family about my hip resurfacing surgery.  My surgery was a success, and after a while, I didn’t have much more to say about my hip.  But I enjoyed writing, so I wrote about other topics that were on my mind.

THP must have tapped a creative vein, because for some reason, I felt the urge to draw again – something I had not done since high school.  So in addition to writing, my posts now include some of my sketches, drawings, and paintings.

The Hipping Post has evolved from a story of my hip resurfacing to something entirely different.  The name of my blog may be less relevant today than it was when I started, but I like it, so I’m sticking with it.

I categorized the posts about my hip under “Hip Resurfacing”, so please click on that category if you are interested.  If you would like to contact me, please email me at:  doug(at)dougbodel(dot)com.

The Hipping Post may evolve further, but if you enjoy my posts, I hope you will continue to visit.

Best,

Doug

  1. Hey Doug –

I am of the opinion that resurfacing sounds much more modern than replacement. It’s merely a tune-up, an upgrade if you will. And, there are a number of benefits to such a procedure: more attention at airport security, imposing threats in a robotic voice to misbehaving children, changing your name to Steve Austin, being able to run faster at 80 than when you were 35… the list goes on. The only negative I can think of is immediately demagnetizing your credit cards the first time you put your wallet in your pocket. Otherwise, you’re all good!
Looking forward to following the blog and the stories of your adventurous new hip.

    best,

    • Thanks Chad,
I’ve been warned that airport security will not be Doug-friendly post surgery. Apparently I get an i.d. card to show TSA that I’ve got legit metal in me. But, the nurse at my pre-op class said that it doesn’t matter as TSA has stopped accepting them. So, it’s best I get used to beeping wands and pat downs.
      Cheers,
      Doug

  2. I really love your art, you’re so talented! Great blog!

  3. Really great drawings!! It’s nice to keep a creative hobby alive alongside our usual day-to-day 🙂

  4. Funny, I thought the Hipping Post was some reference to “being hip.” I think you could just as easily adopt that idea for this blog, because you seem pretty hip to me!

    🙂

  5. Love your work! Glad I found this blog, I can’t wait to read up on future posts!
